Poor villages in Northern Hebei province use windmills to solve water shortage problem.

Due to the low level of income in Northern Hebei along with a poorly developed electrical grid, more than 25% of the farmland is irrigated by the use of diesel powered pumps. Not only is the electricity cost higher in this region, but there is also enormous use of diesel fuel, which is not a renewable resource and increased levels of air pollution.

This region has an abundance of ground water; so that small windmills with a wind wheel diameter of 2 M will provide satisfactory service. Iron Man Windmill Co. LTD installed the  windmills in April, 2006, using a wind wheel 2 meters in diameter. They have 18 sails and a tower height of 12 meters. These windmills can lift water 15 meters high, which is more than sufficient. After these windmills were installed, they were documented to pump 3.3 tons per hour. This has provided a cost effective solution to the problem of pumping water for irrigation and has solved the water problems for this village.
